The end of the year is a reflective yet busy time for me. Projects and tasks seem to pile up as deadlines approach, and Christmas is just around the corner. Amid the hustle, I’ve found that creating space for myself—mentally and physically—helps me approach the new year with clarity. This week, I’ve started that process, focusing on one of the most stress-relieving tasks: digital decluttering.
Clearing the Inbox
Today, I took on my email inbox—a task I revisit every year. I unsubscribed from newsletters that no longer serve me, a practice that’s become more liberating over time. If I ever miss one, I can always re-subscribe, but most of the time, letting go creates a much-needed sense of calm.
I’ve noticed a pattern with my email habits. I often save newsletters, especially those about personal development, into folders for “reading later.” But let’s be honest: I rarely go back to those folders. Whether it’s personal or work-related, if something doesn’t feel timely or relevant, it’s better to let it go.
Instead, I now prioritize newsletters that energize and inspire me. For example, one newsletter I keep is about building stronger relationships and improving active listening. It’s a topic that resonates deeply with me, so I’ve started using email reminders to revisit it—letting it return to my inbox in a few weeks. If it still feels meaningful then, I carve out time to read it; if not, I let it go again. This approach helps me stay intentional with the content I consume.
Decluttering My Digital Space
Beyond my inbox, I’m also tackling my computer’s desktops. When I’m busy or stressed, I’ll save a document or photo to the desktop as a quick fix. Over time, it becomes cluttered, which distracts me. Taking a moment to organize and clear it not only boosts my productivity but also gives me a sense of peace—there’s something satisfying about seeing a clean, organized digital space.
Looking Ahead
Next week, I’ll shift my focus to reflecting on the year’s highs and lows—something I’m excited to share with you. This process of decluttering, both mentally and digitally, is my way of creating space to embrace what’s to come.
What about you? Do you have end-of-year rituals or best practices that help you reset and refocus? I’d love to hear your tips and reflections!
